The Importance of Fiqh and Excellence of a Faqih...

Fiqah refers to Islamic Jurisprudence and is the explanation of the Shariah in the light of the Qur’an and Sunnah. There are four well-known schools of Jurisprudence, namely; Hanafi; Shafi’i; Hambali and Maliki. Fiqh plays a very important part in the life of every Muslim. The learned Jurists (Fuqaha) have derived the important rulings of the Shariah based on the commands of Qur’an and Sunnah. The importance of Fiqh and the excellence in understanding the Deen has been mentioned clearly in the Holy Qur’an and the Hadith.

Fiqh in the Light of the Qur’an al-Karim

Intellect, acumen and understanding are great blessings of Allah. It is necessary for a Muslim to be blessed with these if he wishes to understand the Holy Qur’an, The Hadith, and the secrets and laws that have been mentioned therein.

Almighty Allah says

إن في ذلك لآيات لقوم يعقلون
‘Verily, in it are signs for those who understand’ [Surah al-Rome, Verse 24]

In another verse of the Holy Qur’an Allah SubHanuhu wa Ta’ala says

إن في ذلك لآيات لقوم يتفكرون
‘Verily, in it are signs for those who deliberate.’ [Surah al-Rome, Verse 21]

Almighty Allah says

وتلك الأمثال نضربها للناس لعلهم يتفكرون
‘And We present these examples for the people, so that they may contemplate’ [Surah al-Hashr, Verse 21]

Allah SubHanuhu wa Ta’ala says

قد فصلنا الآيات لقوم يفقهون
‘Undoubtedly, we have explained the signs in detail; for those who understand.’ [Surah al-An’aam Verse 98]

The above mentioned verses of the Holy Qur’an make it very clear that to attain Tafaqquh fid Deen, i.e. proper understanding and appreciation of the Deen; one has to be blessed with intellect and the capability to understand.

Those who have been blessed with the knowledge of Deen and especially with the knowledge of Fiqh are those who have been bestowed with special blessings by Allah SubHanuhu wa Ta’ala.

The Holy Qur’an makes it very clear that those with knowledge and those who are unaware are not alike. Almighty Allah says

قل هل يستوي الذين يعلمون والذين لا يعلمون إنما يتذكر أولو الألباب
‘(O Beloved) Say you; Are those who know and those who know not equal? Surely, it is the wise alone that recognize the guidance.’ [Surah al-Zumar, Verse 9]

Almighty Allah says:

ومن يؤت الحكمة فقد أوتي خيرا كثيرا
‘And he, who has been blessed with wisdom, has surely been blessed with great virtue.’ [Surah al-Baqarah, Verse 269]

It must be noted that the Mufasireen (commentators of the Qur’an) have mentioned that wherever in the Qur’an the mention of Wisdom has come, it refers to the knowledge of Fiqh. The importance of Fiqh, i.e. understanding the Deen is also evident from this verse of the Holy Qur’an.

Almighty Allah says

فلولا نفر من كل فرقة منهم طائفة ليتفقهوا في الدين ولينذروا قومهم إذا رجعوا إليهم لعلهم يحذرون
‘And it is not possible for all the believers to go out (at once); Then why should a delegation not come forth from every grouping, so that they may attain the understanding of Religion, thereafter returning to their people, warning them, in the hope that they may remain guarded. [Surah al-Tawbah, Verse 122]

Whilst explaining this verse of the Holy Qur’an, Sadrul Afaadil Allama Sayyid Na’eemud’deen Muradabadi Alaihir raHma wa ar-Ridwan says:

‘It is not necessary for every person to become an Aalim or Faqih. However, every individual has to attain sufficient knowledge to be able to differentiate between that which is lawful and unlawful, and to know what Fard is and what Waajib is. To acquire this amount of knowledge is Fard-e-‘Ain upon every Muslim, and to acquire more knowledge than this is Fard-e-Kifaayah. It has been mentioned in the Hadith, that it is Fard upon every Muslim to acquire knowledge (of Deen).’ [Tafseer Khazain al-Irfan]

Blessed Grave of  Imam Maalik Ibn Anas Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu in Baqi Sharif.
The Excellence of a Faqih in the Light of Hadith

Up to now, we have mentioned the importance of Fiqh in the light of the Holy Qur’an. This has been further explained and clarified in the Hadith Sharif.

Hadrat Sayyiduna Ameer Mu’awiyah Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu has reported that the Beloved Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him) said:

من يرد الله به خيرا يفقهه في الدين
‘If Allah wills to bestow someone with special virtue; He makes him a Faqih of the Religion’.

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Chapter 13, Page 137, Hadith 71
Sahih Muslim, Volume 6, Chapter 34, Page 396, Hadith 2439
Mishkat al-Masabih, Volume 1, Page 43, Hadith 200

Hadrat Abu Hurairah Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu reported that Rasoolullah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam said:

خيارهم في الجاهلية خيارهم في الإسلام إذا فقهوا
‘Those who were good in the days of ignorance are also good in Islam, if they have understanding of the Deen.’

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 12, Chapter 8, Page 20, Hadith 3353
Sahih Muslim, Volume 15, Chapter 44, Page 450, Hadith 6311
Mishkat al-Masabih, Volume 1, Page 43, Hadith 201

In this Hadith, Rasoolullah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam mentioned that people are bestowed with being better, on the basis of Fiqh, i.e. on the basis of their understanding of their Deen. This also proves that according to Rasoolullah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam, one of the best qualities in a person is for him to have knowledge of Fiqh.

Once the Holy Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him) made the following Dua for Hadrat Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu by saying:

اللهم فقهه في الدين
‘O Allah! Make him a Faqih of the Religion.’

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Chapter 10, Page 260, Hadith 143
Sahih Muslim, Volume 16, Chapter 45, Page 195, Hadith 6523
Mishkat al-Masabih, Volume 3, Page 340, Hadith 6139

Hadrat Ibn ‘Abbas Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu says that Rasoolullah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam said

فقيه واحد أشد على الشيطان من ألف عابد
‘One Faqih is more superior over shaitaan, than a thousand worshippers.’

Sunan Tirmidhi, Volume 10, Chapter 19, Page 203, Hadith 2897
Sunan Ibn Majah, Volume 1, Chapter 39, Page 267, Hadith 227
Mishkat al-Masabih, Volume 1, Page 47, Hadith 217

From this Hadith it is evident that a single Faqih (Jurist) is more powerful over shaitaan, than a thousand devout worshippers. The reason for this is that due to the knowledge which Almighty Allah has bestowed upon him, and due to his understanding of the Deen, he is able to recognise and avoid the traps and the trickery of shaitaan. In reality, he becomes the one who assist others to be protected from the trickery and deception of shaitaan.

Blessed Grave of Imam Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi'i Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu in al-Fustat, Egypt.

In Ilm al-Hadith, there are two things that are fundamental. The first being, the authenticity of the chain of transmission, and its narration; and the second being its meaning and understanding it. The Muhaditheen of the Ummah memorised and preserved the words and chain of transmission of the Hadith, whereas the distinguished Fuqaha carried the responsibility of understanding its true meaning and wisdom. It should also be noted that the distinguished Fuqaha also have complete expertise and proficiency in the subject of Hadith. One incident pointing to the importance and excellence of the Fuqaha is as follows:

Khateeb Baghdadi Alaihir raHma wa ar-Ridwan mentions that a Group of Muhaditheen were present, when a woman who used to bathe deceased females came forth and asked a question, ‘Can a female who is menstruating give Ghusl to a female who has passed away or not?’

Imam Yahya bin Mu’een, Abu Hatheema, Zuhair bin Harb, and Khalf bin Saalim etc. who are regarded amongst distinguished Muhaditheen were present there. Each one of them began to look at the other, and none of them was able to give an answer immediately. At that time, Imam Abu Thaur who with the exception of being a Muhadith; was also a Mujtahid and a Faqih, passed by. The lady approached him and queried regarding the said issue. He said ‘Yes, a female who is menstruating is permitted to give Ghusl to a deceased female.’ The reason being that once Rasoolullah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam said to Hadrat A’isha Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anha:

حيضتك ليس في يدك
‘Your menstruation is not in your hand’.

It is also mentioned in the Hadith that whilst in the condition of Haidh, Hadrat A’isha Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anha used to sprinkle water in the hair of the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him) and she would comb a path in his hair. So, if in such a condition, water can be poured onto the head of a living person, why then can a deceased not be given Ghusl?’

When the distinguished Muhaditheen heard this Fatwa of Imam Abu Thaur they began to discuss the chain of transmission of the Hadith he had mentioned, mentioning who its narrators were and how it was narrated. When the woman heard this, she said ‘Where were you all this while?’ In other words, she tried to say that if that were the case, why then did they not give the answer’. Imam al-A'zam Abu Hanifa's (Alaihir raHma) full name was Nuʿman ibn Thabit ibn Zuta ibn Marzuban. He was born in Kufa in Iraq in 80 A.H. He belonged to the pious period of the Taabi'ins (Successors of the Sahabas).

DIVINE MISSION

It is stated in a Hadith Shareef which Imam al-Harizmi reported from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (Radi Allahu Anhuma) that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: "Among my Ummah, there will come a man called Abu Hanifa. On the Day of Resurrection, he will be the light of my Ummah." Another Hadith Shareef states: "In every century, a number of my Ummah will attain to high grades. Abu Hanifa will be the highest of his time." These two Ahadith are recorded in "Durr al-Mukhtar."

AS A TEACHER

When his teacher, Sayyiduna Hammad Basri (Alaihir raHma) passed away, Imam A'zam Abu Hanifa (Alaihir raHma) was 40 years old and he began teaching. He became very famous and travelled many places. Students from all over the Muslim world came to him to listen to his lectures, interviews and debates. Imam Maalik (Alaihir raHma) also learnt under him. When he was 56 years old, Caliph Mansur came to power after the Ummayad dynasty was overthrown by the Abbasids in 132 A.H. Since Imam Abu Hanifa (Alaihir raHma) opposed the Caliph's ruthless killing of the Ahle Bait, he was arrested. The Caliph offered the Imam the post of a Qaadi (Judge), but he refused. The Caliph Mansur had him beaten with a stick 30 strokes. His feet bled. Caliph Mansur repented and offered Imam A'zam Abu Hanifa (Alaihir raHma) 30000 pieces of silver. The great Imam refused once more. He was imprisoned again and thrashed 10 more strokes every day.

PASSES AWAY

Imam A'zam Abu Hanifa (Alaihir raHma) passed away while in Salaah. He had been poisoned by the orders of Caliph Mansur. His Janaza Salaah was performed six times and each time 50 000 people took part. People continued to come and pray for him for 20 days after he was buried. He was 70 years old. In 459 A.H. a Mazaar (Tomb) was built for him by the Seljuki ruler Alp Arsalan. He lies buried in a Tomb situated near Baghdad in Iraq.

For 40 years Imam A'zam Abu Hanifa (Alaihir raHma) performed the Fajr Salaah with the Wudu that he made for the Esha Salaah (ie. he did not sleep after the night prayer). He performed Hajj 55 times. He used to recite the entire Holy Quran once every day and once every night. Imam A'zam Abu Hanifa (Alaihir raHma) had so much of Taqwa (Piety) that for 30 years he fasted every day (except for the 5 forbidden days). He often read the Holy Quran in one rakaah or two. He did not accept any presents from anyone. He wore clothes like those of the poor. Imam A'zam Abu Hanifa (Alaihir raHma) once said: "I laughed once in my life and I regret it." He talked little and thought much. It is said that at the place where his soul was taken, he read the Holy Quran 7000 times.

GREATNESS OF IMAM ABU HANIFA

Yahya ibn Sa`id al-Qattan said:

"We have not heard better than Abu Hanifa's opinion and we have followed most of his positions."

 Yahya ibn Ma`in, he said of Abu Hanifa that

"He is not only thiqa (trustworthy) but thiqa thiqa. Al- Dhahabi even calls Ibn Ma`in a fanatic Hanafi."

Al-Fadl ibn Dukayn, one of the major authorities of Ahl al-Hadith. He said:

"Muslims should make du`a to Allah on behalf of Abu Hanifa in their prayers, because the Sunan and the fiqh were preserved for them through him."

Waki` ibn al-Jarrah, he replied to some of them:

"You barred us from Abu Hanifa, are you going to bar us from Zufar??" (Zufar took over the teaching of Hanafi Fiqh in Kufa and Basra after the Imam.)

Abu Mu`awiya al-Darir, he said:

"Love of Abu Hanifa is part of the Sunnah".

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/38177_412294665333_3493158_n.jpg
Ibn Dawud al-Khuraybi:

"Among the people there are plenty of enviers and ignorant ones concerning Abu Hanifa."

Bishr al-Hafi, he said:

"None criticizes Abu Hanifa except an envier or an ignoramus".

 Ibn al-Mubarak. When al-Awza`i criticized Abu Hanifa, Ibn al-Mubarak copied a compilation of Abu Hanifa's fiqh under the name al-Nu`man. Al- Awza`i read it without interruption except for Salat al-Fard. Then he said:

"This Nu`man is a grand master (hadha nabilun min al-ashyakh). Go to him and take as much as you can from him!" Ibn al-Mubarak said: "This is the Abu Hanifa you had forbidden me to see." (Tarikh al-Baghdad)

Ibn al-Mubarak considered one's hatred of Abu Hanifa a mark of Divine wrath.

He also said:

"If Allah had not rescued me with Abu Hanifa and Sufyan [al-Thawri] I would have been like the rest of the common people." Al-Dhahabi relates it as: "I would have been an innovator."

Ibn `A'isha mentioned a fatwa of Abu Hanifa then said:

"Truly, if you had seen him you would have wanted him ! Truly, his similitude and yours is as in the saying:

Curse them much or not, I care little to blame you;
But fill - if you can! - the space they left vacant."

GOLDEN WORDS OF WISDOM:
  • Knowledge without deeds is like a body without a soul. As long as knowledge does not embrace the existence of action it will not be enough not agreeable nor sincere.
  • Difficulties are the result of sin. The sinful therefore does not have the right to lament when difficulties befall him.
  • To reduce the connection of the World means that a person takes that which is essential from the World and leaves that which is non essential.
  • That person who seeks knowledge to attain the World finds that knowledge has no place in his heart.
  • That person whose knowledge does not prevent him from committing sin and transgressions then who is that person who has suffered or incurred a greater loss than him.
  • For the attainment of knowledge satisfaction is useful and satisfaction is not gained by increasing information but by decreasing it.

Qaseeda E Mairajun Nabi Sallaho Alayhe Wassallam

Woh sarwar e kishwar e risalat jo arsh per jalwah gar huye thay
Naye nirale tarab kay saaman Arab ke mehman kay liye thay.
When the supreme Prophet went to his journey to the Divine Throne of Allah,
There were very special arrangements made to welcome the unique guest from Arabia’
Bahar hai shadiyan mubarak chaman ko aabadiyan mubarak
Malak falak apni apni lay main yeh ghar ana dil ka boltay thay.
It was springtime; there were echoes of salutary greeting in the dales;
Then Angels and the skies were singing happy songs in their own way like the nightingales.
Wahan falak per yahan zameen main rachi thi shaadi machi thi dhoomein
Udhar say anwar hastay aatay idhar say naf-haat ooth rahay they.
On the Heavens above and the earth below there was festive celebration;
The dazzling lights came down smiling and the fragrant perfumes went up on this occasion.
Yeh chhut padti thi unkay rukh ki kay arsh tak chandni thi chhatki
Woh raat kya jagmaga rahi thi jagah jagah nasb aainay they
The light emitted by his radiant face created a moonlight near Allah’s throne;
The night was resplendently lit through a multitude of mirrors and brightly shone.

Nayi dulhan ki phaban main Kaaba nikhar kay sanwara sanwar kay nikhra
Hajar key sadqay kamar key eik til main rang lakhoon banao key they.
The Kaaba dressed herself most immaculately to welcome her bridegroom with pride;
The black stone looked like a beautiful mole on her charming body’s side.
Nazar main dulha key pyaray jalway haya say mehrab sir jhukaye
Siyah parday kay moun per aanchal tajaliye zaat e bahat say thay.
With bashful looks the niche lowered her upright head in sheer delight;
The covering black curtain gracefully moved, saturated with the Divine Light,
Khushi kay badal umand kay aaye diloon kay taoos rang laye
Woh naghma e naat ka samaan tha Haram ko khud wajd aa rahe thay
The clouds spontaneously advanced and the hearts engaged in a peacock dance;
To honour the Prophet in a creative stance the Kabaa gazed at him in a lyrical trance.
Yeh jhooma Mizab e zar ka jhoomer kay aa raha kaan per dhalak ker
Phuhar barsi to moti jhar ker Hatim ki gaud mein bharay they.

The golden ornaments of Meezaab gently moved towards the ear from her forehead;
When it drizzled, the raindrops gathered like pearls on Hateem’s welcoming bed.
Dulhan ki khushboo say mast kapray nasim e gustakh aanchloon say
Gilaf e mushkeen jo oord raha tha ghazal naafe basaa rahay thay.
The bride’s body-fragrance intoxicated the surrounding breeze and her own garment;
When the perfumed curtain furled, the gazelles rushed to store its unique scent.
Pahadiyoon ka woh husn e Taz’ee woh oonchi choti woh nazo tamqeen
Saba say sabzah main lehrein aateen dupattay dhani chunay huye thay.
The happy hills smiled and their elegant tops stood out in space;
Like a maiden’s head-scarf the shoots of green grass rhythmically moved with grace.
Naha kay nehroon nay woh chamakta libas aabay rawan ka pehna
Ki mauj e chadiyaan thi dhaar lachka habab e tabaan kay thal takay thay.
The fresh-looking and well-clad rivers ran through the well-trimmed bowers;
It was a rare visual feast of stormy waves, rushing waterfalls and bubbling showers
Purana purdag malgaja tha utha diya farsh chandni ka
Hajoom e tare nigah say kosoon qadam qadam farsh baadley thay.
The old white-floor of moonlight was removed as it was not satin-free;
The new green-floor consisted of gardens and flowers as far as one could see
Ghubar ban ker nisaar jayein kahan ab uss rah guzar ko payein
Hamaray dil huriyoon ki aankhein farishtoon kay per jahan biche thay.
More precious to us than our lives! Where is the Blessed Prophet’s blessed pathway,
On which our humble hearts, the heavenly damsels and wings of the angels lay.
Khuda hee day sabr jaan e purgham dikhaoon kyun kar tujhay woh a’alam
Jab unko jhurmat main lakay qudsi jinaa ka dulha bana rahay thay.
The moment was indescribably exciting, when the angels, pure and wise,
Gathered round him and dressed him as the bridegroom of Paradise.
Utar ker unkay rukh ka sadqa yeh noor ka but raha tha bada
Kay chand suraj machal machal ker jabeen ki khairat mangtay thay.
The light emitted by his face was distributed among the beggars with generosity.
The moon and the sun begged most eagerly for this bright charity.
Wohi to ab tak chalak raha hai wohi to joban tapak raha hai
Nahanay may jo gira tha pani katoray taroon nay bhar liye thay.
The same luminous water still shining in their bright path,
Which the stars had gathered in their cups from his overflowing bath.
Bacha jo talwoon ka unkay dhouwan bana woh Jannat ka rang o roghan
Jinhoon nay dulha ki payi utran woh phool gulzar e noor kay thay.
With the surplus sole-washed water Paradise was painted bright,
Those who wore his used-clothes became flowers, of the garden of light.
Khabar yeh tehweelay maher ki thi kay rut sunhani ghadi phiray gee
Wahan ki poshak zay-bay tan ki yahan ka joda badha chukay thay.
The sun revealed the news that Allah Almighty’s beloved Messenger
Was soon expected to come back after meeting his Creator.
Tajaliy e haq ka sehra sar per salat o tasleem ki nichawar
Do roya qudsi paray jama kar kharhay salami kay waastay thay.
The wedding crown of Allah’s light was on his head amidst a blissful prayer;
The Angels stood on both sides of his way to present a salute of honour.
Jo hum bhi waan hotay khaq e gulshan lipat kay qadmoon say ley tay utran
Magar karein kiya naseeb main to yeh namuradi kay din likhay thay.
Had we been there, we would have sought for some charity;
How could that happen, when we were destined to live this life of poverty?
Abhi na aaye thay pusht e zeen tak kay sir hui maghfirat ki shallak
Sada shafa’at nay di mubarak! gunaah mastana jhoomtay thay.
He had hardly sat on the saddle that the journey of salvation ended at a glance;
The salvation itself congratulated him and the sins engaged themselves in a dance.
Ajab na tha rakhsh ka chamakna gazal e dam khurdasa bhadakna
Shuaein bukkay urha rahi theen tadapte ankhoon pay saieqay thay.
It is understandable why the Prophet’s horse startled like a frightened deer;
The rays of light dazzled his eyes and the lightning flashed too near.
Hujum e umeed hai ghatao muradein day kar inhein hatao
Adab ki baagein liye badhao malaika may yeh ghal ghale thay.
The clouds gave alms to the beggars and made sure there was enough room;
The angels held the reigns respectfully and welcomed the bridegroom.
Uthi jo garde rahe munawar woh noor barsa kay raaste bhar
Ghiray thay badal bharay thay jal thal umand kay jangle ubal rahay thay.
The dust of the luminous path rose up like the clouds of light;
The space overflowed with rain and the whole way was exceptionally bright.
Sitam kiya kaisi mat kathi thi qamar woh khak unkay rah guzar ki
Utha na laya kay miltay miltay ye daagh sab dekhte mite they
0 moon! You should have brought some dust from the Prophet’s way;
You would have got rid of your spots by rubbing it on them for a day.
Burraq kay naqshe sum kay sadqe woh gul khilaye kay saray rastey
Mehaktay gulban mehakte gulshan hare bhare lahlaha rahe thay.
The hoff-prints of the ‘Buraq’ filled the entire way with flowers;
In no time all over the place there were fragment orchards and bowers.
Namaz e Aqsa main tha yehi seer ayan houn ma’ani e awwal akhir
Key dast basta hain pichey hazir jo salatanat aagay kar gaye thay.
The divine wisdom of ‘Aqsa’ prayer was to unfold the secret of first and last;
All the Prophets prayed behind him, though they had actually lived in the past.
Yeh unki aamad ka dab-daba tha nikhar her shaiy ka ho raha tha
Nujoom o aflak jam o mina ujaltay thay khangaltey they.
The dignity of his arrival brightened up everything immaculately;
The stars, the skies, the cups and the containers cleaned smartly.
Naqab ultay woh mehr e anwar jalal o rukhsar garmiyoon per
Falak ko hebat say tap charhi thi tapaktay anjum kay aablay tha
When he advanced, his unveiled sun-like face shone with glamour;
The sky felt over-awed and the stars became dimmer and dimmer.
Yeh joshishe noor ka asar tha key aabay gohar qamar qamar tha
Safaey rah say phisal phisal kar sitare qadmon pay laut’tay thay.
The overflowing light filled the path with luminous water;
The stars slipped time and again and fell at the feet of Allah’s messenger.
Badha ye lehra kay behr o wahdat key dhul gaya naam e raige kasrat
Falak key teloon ki kiya haqeeqat yeh arsh o kursi do bulbule thay.
The ocean of Unity surged forward and washed sands of Diversity;
Forget the dunes of the sky, just two bubbles were ‘Allah’s Arch and Kursi’
Woh zill e rehmat woh rukh key jalwe ke taare chupte na khilne paate
Sunehri zarbaft udi atlas yeh than sab dhoop chaoon ke the.
His sun-like merciful face eclipsed the stars that shine;
The moonlight and starlight looked like shadows in his sunshine.
Chala woh serve e chamaan kharamaa na ruk saka sidra say damaan
Palak jhapakti rahi woh kab kay sab aeno aan say guzar chuke thay.
When the unique bridegroom advanced even the lote tree failed to hold him back;
In the wink of an eye he went beyond this and that range of the track.
Jhalak see eik qudsiyoon per aayi hawwaa bhi daman ki phir na payi
Sawari dulha ki dur pohnchi barat main hosh hi gaye thay.
The angels felt that a glimpse had flashed through their sight and mind;
The bridegroom went far ahead but his companions were left behind.
Thakay thay ruhul amin key bazu chuta woh daman kahan woh pehloo
Rikab chooti ummeed tuti nigah e hasrat key walwaley thay.
Gabriel’s wings got tired and he could not accompany the divine guest;
The Prophet’s stirrup slipped out of his hands though he tried to hold it to his best.
Ravish ki garmi ko jis ney socha dimag say eik bhabuka phoota
Khirad key jungle main phool chumka dahar dahar ped jal rahe thay.
He, who reflected on the Prophet’s speed suddenly found his mind aflame;
All the trees in the woods of intellect started burning with shame.
Jiloo main jo murgay a’qal uray thay ajab booray haloon girtay partay
Woh sidrah hee per’rahay thay thak kar charha dam tewar aa gaye thay.
The birth of intellect flying ahead of the Prophet ended in a miserable plight;
They could not go beyond the lote tree in their insurmountable flight.
Qavi they nurgan e waham kay per uray to urdnay ko aur dam bhar
Utha’ee seenay ki aisi thokar kay khoonay andesha th’oo’ktay thay.
The strong-winged birds of superstition flew but soon lost their breath;
They sustained a fatal blow on their chests and fell down bleeding to death.
Suna yeh itnay mein arsh e haq nay kay lay mubarak ho taaj waley
Wohi qadam khair say phir aaye jo pehle taaj e sharaaf tere thay.
At the moment of Allah’s throne heard the angels raising a salutary uproar;
How nice to welcome back the same auspicious feet, which graced us before.
Yeh sunkay bay khud pukar utha nisar jaoon kahan hain aaqa
Phir unkay talwoon ka paoon bosa yeh meri aankhon kay din phire thay.
On hearing this, the devotee exclaimed, “Where is my master?
How lucky that my eyes will again kiss the soles of Allah’s Messenger!”
Jhuka tha mujre ko arsh e aala gire they sajde may bazme bala
Yeh aankhein qadmoon say mal raha tha woh girde qurbaan ho rahay thay
Allah’s throne knelt down to welcome, the angels fell again into a prostration’
It rubbed his eyes on his feet; they showed their utmost veneration.
Ziyaein kuch arsh per yeh aaein kay sari qindileen jhilmilayeen
Huzoor e khurshid kya chamaktay chairagh moun apna dekh tay thay.
Such a bright light shone that all the candles flickered;
The lamps felt ashamed when the ‘sun’ itself appeared.
Yehi sam’an tha kay paikay rehmat khabar yeh laya kay chaliye Hazrat
Tumhari khatir kushada hain woh jo kalim per band rastaay thay.
In this atmosphere the Messenger of Mercy came respectfully to say;
“Those ways are open for you today, which were closed for Moses one day.”
Badh ay Muhammad qaree ho Ahmed qareeb aa sarwar e mumajjad
Nisar jaoon yeh kiya nida thi yeh kiya samaan tha yeh kiya mazay thay.
“Move forward, O Muhammed! [Peace Be Upon Him ] Come nearer, O Ahmed, My beloved.”
What a lovely call it was and what a joyful atmosphere it created!
Tabarakallah shan teri tujhi ko zaiba hai bay niyazi
Kahin to woh josh e lan-tarani kaheen takazay visal kay thay.
“O Allah, all praise be to You; You are undoubtedly carefree;
Once Moses insisted to see you; here You became anxious to see.”
Khirad say keh do kay sir jhuka le gumaan say guzray guzarnay walay
Pare hain yahan khud jaihat ko laalay kisay bataye kidhar gaye thay.
Let intellect bow its head, because it has traveled beyond imagination;
Direction itself is baffled and it cannot dare to imagine his destination.
Surag aino mataa kahaan tha nishan e kaifo illa kahan tha.
Na koi rahi na koi sathi naa sang e manzil naa merhalay thay.
Who could answer where or when? Who could tell us what or how;
There was neither any companion nor any milestone between them and now
Udar say payham taqazay aana idhar say mushkil qadam barhana
Jalal o haibat ka saamna tha jamalo rehmat ubhartay thay.
Allah greatly encouraged him though his pace was humbly slow;
Grandeur checked him but Grace inspired him steadily to go.
Barhay to lekin jhee-jhaktay dartay haya say jhuktay adab say ruktay
Jo qurb unhi ki ravish pay rakhtay to lakhoon manzil kay fasilay thay
He advanced hesitantly with feelings of respect and humility;
Allah led him on this endless journey with an exceptional agility.
Per unka barhna to naam ko tha haqeeq’tan fail tha udhar ka
Tanazuloon mein taraki afza dana tadalla key silsilay thay.
The Prophet’s motion was nominal; it was all done by divine will;
Whenever he slowed down, Allah commanded him to come nearer still.
Hua yeh aakhir kay aik bajra tamojay bahrey hoo mein ubhra
Dana ki godi mein unko lekar fana kay langar utha diye thay.
At last a barge emerged from the ocean of His Personality;
It took him near Allah’s lap and untied the anchor of morality.
Kisay milay ghat ka kinara kither say guzra kahan utra
Bhara jo misle nazar tarara woh apni aankhoon say khud chupay thay.
Who could see this ocean’s shore? It was all speed and surprise;
He leapt like sight and became hidden from his own eyes.
Uthay jo Qasray dana kay parde koi khabar dey to kiya khabar day
Wahan to ja hee nahin duee ki na keh kay woh bhi na thay aray thay.
When the secrets of Nearness were unveiled, who knows what the Reality was?
There was no room for otherliness; don’t say he wasn’t; he really was.
Woh baag kuch aisa rang laya kay guncha o gul ka faraq uthaya
Girah mein kal’liyoon ki baag phoolay guloon kay takmay lagay huay thay
The garden so blossomed that the buds and the roses looked very charming
The unblown and the fully-blown flowers became equally inviting.
Muhito markaz mein faraq mushkil rahe na faasil khutoot e wasil
Kamaan e hairat mein sir jhukaye ajeeb chakar mein da’eray thay.
To differentiate between the circumference and the centre was difficult;
The arches bowed and the circles felt giddy as a result.
Hijab uhnay mein lakhoon parde har aik parday main lakhon jalway
Ajab ghari thi kay waslo furqat janam kay bichray galay milay thay.
Millions of veils disappeared revealing endless oceans of luminosity;
It was strange Union of Lights which symbolised diversity in Unity.
Zabanein sukhi dikha kay mojein tarap rahi thien kay pani paein
Bhanwar ko yeh zofay tashnagi that kay halqay aankhoon mein par gaye thay.
The waves showed their parched tongues and wriggled in search of water;
The whirlpool fainted with thirst and its eye stared farther and farther.
Wohi hai awwal wohi hai aakhir wohi hai batin wohi hai zahir
Usi kay jalway usi say milnay usi say uski taraf gaye thay.
He is the First and the Last; He lives in the Absence and the Presence;
His own hidden light went to see His own visible existence.
Kaman e imakan kay jhutay nukto tum awwal akhir ki phair mein ho
Muhit ki chal say to pucho kidhar say aaye kidhar gaye thay.
O dots on the arch of probability! Why do you guess the first and last?
Ask the track of the circumference, where did the process begin in the past?
Udhar say theen nazray shah namaz’ain idhar say inaam e khusravi mein
Salam o Rehmat kay haar gundh ker glue e pur noor mein paray thay.
Here Allah gave His beloved Messenger a gift of formal and ritual prayers,
He also honoured him with garlands of durood, and salaam’s regal flowers.
Zabaan ko intezar guftan to gos ko hasrat e shunidan
Yahan jo kehna tha keh liya tha jo baat sun’ni thi sun chukay thay.
The tongue was anxious to speak and the ear was eagerly to go very near;
Mysteriously and silently he said what he wanted to say and heard what he wanted to hear.
Woh burj e batha ka mahpara bahishat ki sair ko Sidhara
Chamak pay tha khuld ka sitara kay iss qamar kay qadam gaye thay.
Then the distinguished guest was taken to Paradise soon;
The stars of Paradise felt honoured to see the glory of their Arabian moon.
Suroor e maqdam ki roshni thi kay tabishoon say mah e arab ki
Jina kay gulshan thay jhaar farshi jo phool thay sab kanwal banay thay.
The Arabian moon was accorded a glorious welcome joyfully;
All the heavenly flowers became daffodils and the chandeliers shone more brightly.
Tarab ki nazish kay haan lachakiye adab woh bandish kay hill na sakiye
Yeh josh e ziden tha keh poday kasha kish e arah kay talay thay.
The spirit of ecstasy edged him on but the sense of humility checked him modestly;
A real conflict of emotions: “To advance or just to stay there reverently.”
Khuda ki qudrat keh chand haq kay karoroon manzil mein jalwa kar kay
Abhi na taroon ki chaoon badli keh noor kay tarkay aa liye thay.
Allah’s omnipotence be praised! His truthful moon shone at millions of stations on his way;
Even when he returned home by dawn before the starlight faded away.
Nabi E Rehmat Shafi E Ummat RAZA pay Lillah ho inayat
Isay bhi unn khal’atoon say hisa jo khas rehmat kay waan bate thay
Take pity on Raza, O our Intercessor and Allah’s Messenger of Mercy!
Grant him a small share from the gifts distributed during the Meraj journey.
Sana e Sarkar hai wazifa qabool e Sarkar hai taman’na
Na shayari ki hawas na parwah radi thi kiya kaisay kafiye thay.
My mission is to praise the Prophet; my aim is to achieve his pleasure;
The poetic rhymes and refrains have no value; Mustapha’s Love is my true treasure.
